Helen sighed unhappily. ‘You two are a right pair of miserable bastards to work with,’ she growled moodily. ‘I thought this assignment would have been fun with the three of us working together.’

‘Shut up, Helen,’ Kelly snapped. Her attention was focused on the typing in front of her. ‘I don’t have time for your stupidity right now.’

Helen snorted rudely in reply. She turned to Russel at his monitor and tested a winning smile on him. ‘What about you, big boy?’ she asked coquettishly. ‘Are you in the mood for some fun?’ She reached a hand beneath his desk and stroked his inner thigh.

Russel stopped her hand from making its way up to his groin. ‘Not here,’ he hissed forcefully. ‘Why don’t you stop messing about and get on with your work?’

Helen snatched her hand from Russel’s, glaring at him with hostile intent. ‘What the hell’s wrong with you?’ she demanded. ‘You were great fun last night. Now you’re acting like a real bore. I thought it would have been fun being on an assignment with you. What’s wrong? Have you got the hots for that bitch who runs this dump?’

Russel glowered angrily at Helen. ‘I don’t think you should be calling Miss Byrne a bitch,’ he said quietly. ‘It shows a distinct lack of respect.’

‘Well, that’s because I harbour a distinct lack of respect for the overbearing cow,’ Helen said emphatically. She watched the flare of anger erupt in Russel’s eyes and giggled triumphantly. ‘I knew it!’ she declared happily. ‘You do have the hots for her. You want to get into her knickers, don’t you?’

‘Keep your voice down,’ Russel hissed, his cheeks flaring bright crimson. ‘Someone will hear you.’

‘Perhaps I want someone to hear me,’ Helen suggested wickedly. ‘Perhaps I want our conversation to be overheard, so that the word gets back to her. Hadn’t you thought that’s what I might be doing?’

‘Give it a rest, Helen,’ Kelly snapped tiredly. ‘Lets just get the work done. This is mine and Russel’s first time out and neither of us wants to screw up.’

Helen sniffed disdainfully. ‘Still trying to be teacher’s pet? They don’t think any better of you if you suck up to them like that.’

‘I’m not sucking up to anyone,’ Kelly told her crisply. ‘I’m just getting on with my job. I think that’s what you should be doing.’

Helen glared angrily at Kelly. She seemed on the brink of saying something, then hesitated, a wicked smile shaping her lips. ‘Why don’t you and Russel come to the stationery room with me? I bet we could have a laugh in there.’ She forced her tone to sound encouraging.

‘Make a sentence out of these words, Helen,’ Kelly said wearily. ‘Fuck off, and stop bothering me.’ Her fingers sped over the keyboard before she stopped and cursed the mistake she had just made.

‘Russel’s wearing a pair of women’s knickers,’ Helen told Kelly cheerfully, pretending she had not heard her rebuke. ‘Do you want to see them?’

‘You said you weren’t going to tell anyone about that,’ Russel hissed suddenly.
